Sinopse: The concept of sexual fluidity was derived from a study conducted only with women, thus research in this field has focused predominantly on female sexuality. Although this concept is present in the contemporary debate about human sexuality, it has an associated gender bias since it seems to attribute less applicability to male experiences. Moreover, research on sexual fluidity in men is followed by a heteronormative bias that presents male sexual fluidity as a disruption of heterosexuality and, therefore, a failure to meet the social norms of masculinity. The main aim of this work is to access experiences of sexual fluidity in men, considering the surveillance and control of hegemonic masculinity, and starting from sexual identity’s diversity. Therefore, a meta-synthesis on male sexual behavior and hegemonic masculinity was carried out. It comprises the analysis of 15 qualitative studies that collectively gather the narratives of 438 men aged between 11 and 71. The results of this study reveal a complex relationship between male sexuality and the influence of hegemonic masculinity. It was also conducted a theoretical study that critically presents a historical contextualization and systematizes the main theoretical contributions of the concept of sexual fluidity. In addition, this work included an empirical study that derived from semi-structured interviews to 15 participants aged between 20 and 53 years old with experiences of sexual fluidity. This work resulted in two scientific productions. From the results we highlight the experiences of sexual fluidity of a group of participants that revealed the ability to align with hegemonic masculinities and, simultaneously, with the experiences of alternative masculinities, therefore negotiate masculinities with sexual non-normativities. In this work, we access sexuality under construction, along with personal and social reactions as a result of the unsettling ambivalence of variable and flexible sexual identities and orientations that take place in a social world we call “heterostable.”
