Sinopse: In late modernity, sexuality has become a form of personal expression and self-fulfilment. The process of autonomization of sexuality gave birth to new kinds of people defined by their sexual practices and particularly by the object of their desire. If today sexuality appears at least partly dissociated from gender this does not equate to a full separation; these are two intersecting dimensions whose outlines and connecting points are often unclear. This presentation debates this issue based on data from an ongoing research project, which highlight the persistent presence of gender in representations of sexuality. Although the object of this project are the effects of a an offspring’s coming out as gay, lesbian, bisexual or queer on parental identities, the data collected so far suggest that topics denoting a violation of normative sexuality are among the most troubling issues for parents. But what this violation symbolically stands for are fundamentally the difficulties evoked by the disruption of the gender order.
